Summary of Procedure: Epidural Steroid Injection
In America, back problems and pain are among patients’ most frequent complaints to their health care providers. Back pain can be caused by herniated discs, bone spurs, sciatica, and other conditions.
Fortunately, there are many ways to go about alleviating patients’ pain, one of which is epidural steroid injection. These types of injections treats inflammatory developments related to leg pain, back pain, neck pain, and even arm pain.

What to Expect Post-Procedure of an Epidural Steroid Injection
A physician will use fluoroscopy guidance to deliver cortisone to the epidural space. A local anesthetic will then be used to offer temporary pain relief. The physician will monitor the patient for a short time to monitor the effectiveness of the injection. If a sedative is deemed necessary during the procedure, the patient will need to secure a ride home and should follow post-procedure precautions for the remainder of the day.
Additional steroid injections may be recommended for patients with more severe pain. Generally, no more than three epidural steroid injections are given per year.
